Foundation Awards $5000 to District

(Harlan, Ky.) – The Harlan Independent Schools Education Foundation, HISEF, made a $5000 gift the Harlan Independent School District on Thursday to help support the purchase of 20 laptop computers. The IBM Lenovo laptops will be used to continue the support of students pursuing credit recovery and taking dual-credit high school/college level courses at the High School.

President David Johnson was on hand to make the presentation and share his thoughts and hopes for the future work of the education foundation. Former Harlan Independent Superintendent, David Johnson now serves as the President of the foundation. Working closely with former President Leo Miller, who now serves as a Foundation director, Johnson was pleased to see the work of the Foundation benefit the students and community. Johnson noted, “This organization exists to support the legacy of the Harlan Independent Schools and is committed to the mission of supporting the district’s pursuit of educational excellence for its students. We are pleased to offer this gift and look forward to working with our alumni and community on many new and engaging endeavors to impact our community.”

HISEF was established in August of 2006 and is composed of 15 voting members along with the local Superintendent who serves in an ex-officio capacity and meets four times per year. The foundation is committed to raising funds to help support the educational efforts of the school district.

Current Superintendent, Charles Morton, commented on the gift, “Any financial gift towards education is really an investment in the future. What a wonderful legacy to be a part of and we are honored that the Foundation is working hard to support our students and families. The financial investments made to the district are critical to our success and we appreciate the donors and their recognition of the work we do to make them proud of their school and community.”
