Board Members

(Harlan, Ky.) – The Harlan Independent School District is pleased to announce the appointment and swearing in of its newest board of education member, Mr. Joe Burkhart, a lifelong member of the Harlan community and proud graduate of Harlan High School.

Burkhart attended Harlan Independent Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 2007. His wife is also a product of the district, and together they are raising the next generation of Green Dragons. Their two children, who began their education at Sunshine School in the K–3 program, attend Harlan Elementary School.

Public education runs deep in Burkhart’s family. His mother devoted more than 30 years as a teacher in the district, shaping countless students along the way. Following his own educational journey, Burkhart graduated from Lincoln Memorial University in 2013 and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. He currently works in local government audits with the Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts.

Burkhart says his commitment to the district is both personal and professional. “I attended this school district from kindergarten through high school graduation and have always been proud to tell people where I went to school,” Burkhart said. “This district has a strong tradition of excellence and I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the students of the district and do my part to continue that tradition.”

With his children enrolled in the district, Burkhart added that he sees his service as both an investment in their future and the future of all students. “Having a personal stake in the success of the district with my children, I feel that I can make decisions that will be for the betterment of the district as a whole,” he explained.

Superintendent Jennifer Parsons welcomed Burkhart to the board, noting that his background and professional expertise will be an asset to the district’s ongoing mission of excellence in education.

“Joe brings a unique perspective as both a graduate and a parent in our district,” Parsons said. “We are excited about the skills, insight, and dedication he will bring to the work of serving our students and families.”

Burkhart will finish the current term of Virgil Eversole, who faithfully served as a board member for seven years.
