2022 is looking a little brighter for our students and families at the Harlan Independent School District. Over the Christmas Break, major renovations took a giant step forward at Harlan High School with the redesign of the gymnasium floor. On behalf of the Harlan Independent Board of Education, we are excited to dedicate the gym to Harlan's most decorated athlete, Wallace 'Wah Wah' Jones. We invite the community to Harlan High School on Saturday, January 29th for a dedication ceremony in honor of Wallace 'Wah Wah' Jones and his remarkable accomplishments. Green Dragons 🐉 🏀 took care of business in the Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Challenge going 3-1 and knocking off Frederick Douglass in the final game of the tournament. Fighting back from a 16 point deficit in the first half, the Dragons held Frederick Douglass to two field goals in the fourth qtr to secure a 80-74 win. Junior Jae’dyn Gist scored 19 points and played stellar defense on his way to Player of The Game honors. Jordan Akal led all scores with 32 points and was named to the All Tournament Team. The Green Dragons will return to action next week at Wayne County vs Clinton, Tn. #GoBigGreen #FamilyofDragons

The Harlan Boys Basketball team will play Perry County Central Saturday, Dec. 18 in the DJ Begley Classic. The game will begin at 5:30 pm and will be streamed on NFHS Network. The NFHS Network requires a subscription to watch the games.

The Harlan Independent School District celebrated with its annual Christmas Program. The audience was treated with a dance performed by the HES dance team and music from the many talented choirs and bands. It was a great day to be a dragon.

The HHS Green Dragons Boys Basketball team knocked off 14th Region power, Breathitt County, to capture 3rd place in the WYMT Mountain Classic. Led by Jordan Akal with 35 points, Jae'dyn Gist chipped in 22 to provide the one-two knock out punch. Akal & Gist were named to the All Tournament squad. The HHS Cheer squad also captured 3rd place in the tournament cheer competition.

Congratulations to 8th grader Charlie Day on his selection for the Southeast Scholars Program! Charlie will participate in Southeast Scholars through the 12th grade and earn free tuition for an associates degree from any of the five Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College campuses. The Southeast Scholars program provides academic enrichment opportunities for students in Harlan, Bell, and Letcher counties, beginning in middle school. Current 6th graders interested in applying for next year’s program can contact Mrs. Adams in FRYSC.

Mr. Eric Perry, former Center Director of Cumberland Behavioral Health will step into the role of School Based Mental Health Counselor at Harlan Ind. With more than two decades of professional counseling experience, Mr. Perry is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)

Gobble gobble! HES students hunted turkeys with their families in downtown Harlan, using clues to find the turkeys hidden in the windows of local businesses. Families completing the hunt received an apple pie. The #kyfamengage event was sponsored by 21st Century, FRYSC, and Save the Children.

Tonight is the 56th Annual Boys Choir Fall Preview Concert. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Harlan United Methodist Church. Even though we have just 19 boys, the boys sound great. Come join us tonight at the Harlan Methodist Church.
