(Harlan, Ky) β In a special called meeting on Monday, the Harlan Independent Board of Education unanimously voted to appoint Mrs. Jennifer Parsons as the next Superintendent of the Harlan Independent School District. She will assume the role on July 1, 2025, succeeding current Superintendent C.D. Morton, who previously announced his resignation effective June 30th.
Superintendent Morton expressed confidence in the boardβs decision and emphasized the importance of a timely transition.
βIβm pleased with how efficiently and thoughtfully the process unfolded,β said Morton. βWhile the stepsβfrom electing the screening committee to conducting interviewsβcan be lengthy, they offer valuable perspectives. Ensuring a smooth transition now allows for meaningful collaboration as the school year wraps up.β
Morton praised the selection of Parsons, highlighting their decade-long professional relationship and her deep commitment to the district.
βJennifer started her career at Harlan Independent, and I couldnβt be happier that sheβs been given the opportunity to lead it,β he said. βSheβs been a driving force behind many of our districtβs successes. She operates at an elite level and understands both what it takes to lead and what it takes to change lives. This district is in great hands. The Board of Education hit a home run.β
With a 26-year career in education, Parsons brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She began as a middle school science teacher at Harlan Middle and later served as the Girls Varsity Basketball Coach at Corbin High School, leading the team to a Sweet 16 appearance. She also served as Corbin Middle School Principal before returning to Harlan, where she currently serves as Director of Districtwide Services. In this role, she has been instrumental in advancing curriculum and instruction while overseeing various state and federal programs.
Board Vice Chair Will Miller emphasized Parsonsβ instructional leadership and vision for the future:
βMrs. Parsons is exactly the leader our district needs at this time,β said Miller. βSheβs been at the forefront of curriculum development, educator training, and using data to drive student success. Her vision for innovation and continuous improvement ensures that Harlan will remain a leader in education.β
Parsons expressed gratitude and enthusiasm about her new role:
βMy experience in this district has given me invaluable insight into our studentsβ needs,β said Parsons. βI am honored and humbled to serve as the next Superintendent. Iβm committed to leading with integrity, transparency, and an unwavering focus on student success. Harlan is a special place, and Iβm excited to help take our excellence to even greater heights.β
Board Chairman Dr. Matt Nunez praised Parsons for her long-standing investment in the school and community:
βJennifer is deeply involved in every aspect of our district and has a personal stake in its success, with children attending our schools,β said Nunez. βSheβs well-prepared for this role, and weβre confident she will bring continuity and strong leadership. Our district has only had two superintendents in the past 30 years, and that stability has been vital. Jennifer is the right person to continue that legacy.β
Parsons reflected on the unique strengths of the Harlan Independent School District:
βItβs a privilege to lead a district with such a proud tradition of excellence,β she said. βOver the past ten years, Iβve had the honor of working with an exceptional team of educators, staff, families, and community partners. Together, we create opportunities for every student to thriveβand I look forward to what weβll achieve next.β
Parsons signed a four-year contract, officially beginning her tenure as Superintendent on July 1, 2025.
