Southeast South-Central Educational (SESC) Cooperative held a recognition lunch Saturday to honor school districts, schools, and individual teachers for their part in the New Teacher Center (NTC) program. This program brought educational coaches into the Harlan Independent to help teachers of various experience levels with guidance in planning and teaching practices. Services were also provided to strengthen other teachers to take on instructional coaching roles as well as inform administrative staff on best practices to improve student achievement. Harlan Independent has been a part of the NTC program since it began in the 2020-2021 academic year. This year marks the end of the grant that provided the funding for the program and it was a time for celebration. Dr. Gregory Edens attended the event to represent Harlan Independent and was awarded with a certificate of recognition and a gift card for his participation in the program. SESC and the NTC program will be recognized on the national level for the work they have done in the southeast region of Kentucky. The data gleaned from the program will be used to inform and support other rural educational programs aimed at providing teacher support and professional learning community development. Dr. Edens stated, “SESC has provided assistance within our school district to strengthen my teaching practices and helped me to provide even better educational opportunities for my students.”

HES Students had an "egg-citing" time popping for letters and questions! Save the Children kindergarten and first-grade students popped a balloon of their choice and matched the lowercase letter, from inside the balloon, with the uppercase letter on the egg. Second through fourth grade, they popped a balloon of choice and hunted the egg that matched the correct answer to the question they received about the parts of a book! After finding the correct letter/answer, they received a book, a candy-filled egg, and a chocolate bunny!! Save the Children Mrs. Jessica Fields Mrs. Samantha Brackett

In the last few weeks, Mrs. Stapleton’s science rotation classes have been reviewing the Engineering Design Process. Students in 1st & 2nd grade read “How to Catch a Leprechaun, “ and 3rd & 4th grade read “How to Catch the Easter Rabbit.” All groups planned out their traps and then created prototypes of their traps. Kindergarten helped solve the problem of “an itch on Mrs. Stapleton’s back.” They created “backscratchers” to solve the problem.
