September is the month we celebrate grandparents. Grandparents are a blessing to our students. Harlan Elementary School staff would like to celebrate with you each Friday during the month of September by inviting grandparents to eat breakfast with their grandchild. We have designated each Friday to a certain grade level:
Friday, September 2nd- Kindergarten
Friday, September 9th- 1st Grade
Friday, september 16th- 2nd grade
Friday, September 23rd- 3rd Grade
Friday, September 30th- 4th Grade
You may join your grandchild 7:50 at am in the HES Cafeteria. Breakfast is $3.00 for adults.

Students in Ms. Wilson’s Health & PE classes had a guest in their classes today. Heather Maggard, from the 4-H Extension Office, presented lessons on My Plate to students in K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. She also discussed Nutrition Facts labels with 4th graders. Mrs. Maggard also brought along several items for the students, such as pencils, activity books, jump ropes, crayons, and measuring spoons. ✏️
💚🏀⛹🏽♀️Congratulations to our 3rd/4th grade girls basketball team and their win on the road against Barbourville. The Lady Dragons won 10-3. Bella Lemar and Jerrah Phillips had 4 points each and Cora Vanover tossed in 2 points. The Lady Dragons return to action Thursday at Pineville. 🐉💚

The Prichard Committee is running a cycle for their Commonwealth Institute of Parent Leadership this year. This is a primarily virtual training and networking opportunity for parents/guardians or other caring community members to learn more about education in Kentucky and how to be a good advocate for all students in their communities and their own children. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per month. The application window is open until September 23rd.

The Harlan Independent Schools will open their doors to K-12 students on Wednesday, August 17th.
Harlan Independent Schools board members Matt Nunez, Will Miller, Debby Howard, Virgil Eversole, and Cindy Allison will join a host of others to commemorate this significant investment into our community and to the future of Harlan.
We invite the community to the newly expanded and upgraded cafe on Tuesday, August 16th at 11:30 for an open house/ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of this phase of work.
Lunch will be provided and visitors may check out the new and improved instructional spaces across the district.

🌞 Sunshine School would like to welcome back Rebecca Rodriguez to the Dragon family! Rebecca is a 2022 graduate of the University of the Cumberlands where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree. She is currently enrolled at the Cumberlands in the Masters in Art of Teaching program for early childhood and elementary education. Rebecca has been a part of the Dragon Family for some time now. She is married to Harlan High School Alumnus, Coach Johnny Rodriguez, and is the mother of three Harlan Dragons: Eli, Malachi, and Jordan. She has served our district for more than 6 years as an assistant at Sunshine Preschool. She is excited to start the new school year as a K-3 Teacher at Sunshine and looks forward to a great year! 💚 #morethanaschool #familyofdragons
