Fourth graders are reviewing for state testing Amazing Race style! Ten teams of students race and compete to answer comprehensive questions while practicing their test taking strategies. In this race, students go to 6 roadblocks each representing a different testing area (Western Sahara Word Problems, Poem Portugal, Energy Egypt, Mixed Number Madagascar, France Fiction, and Solar Power Spain). While at these roadblocks, students must choose an activity to complete in order to gain and answer questions. They also participate in a detour just like the TV show. The first team to complete the final destination wins!!

Students in Ms. Maggard’s 2nd grade Science class have been exploring various habitats. They have been investigating how plants and animals survive. Students have also been researching while comparing and contrasting the information that they gathered. Students then used the information they gathered to make their own animal diorama habitats!

Exciting news from Harlan Middle School! Four students from HMS have been selected to participate in Rogers Explorers. Rogers Explorers is an intensive program that focuses on cultivating skills in leadership, technology, math, science, and community service. It is developed, coordinated, and supervised by The Center for Rural Development in partnership with University of the Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson College, Eastern Kentucky University, Moorehead State University, Asbury University, University of Pikeville, and Union College. Students from The Center’s 45-county service area may apply during their eighth-grade year. Dylan Cox, Sayed Damaa, and Spencer Cornett were selected to represent Harlan Middle School this summer in the Rogers Explorers program. The program will provide both educational and fun learning opportunities. Students will participate in practical college courses, fine-tune leadership skills, and develop a network of friends and resources throughout the Southern and Eastern Kentucky region. Congratulations, Dragons! 🐉🐉🐉📚📚

On Wednesday, April 20th, Harlan Elementary second grade classes had the wonderful opportunity to visit Zoo Knoxville in Knoxville, Tennessee. In the classroom prior to their visit, second grade students had been studying the diversity of life in different animal habitats. They were able to extend their learning by observing various animals and their habitats in a “living” classroom environment. Students learned more about animal origins, patterns, diet, and habitats. A few of their favorite exhibits were the Red Pandas, the Western Lowland Gorillas, the White-Handed Gibbons, the African Elephants and Lions, the Giraffes, as well as the Chimpanzees. They had a beautiful day of sunshine, learning and fun! Upon returning to the classroom, students participated in writing and sharing their favorite animals and experiences upon returning to the classroom.

On Tuesday, April 19th, our 4th-grade classes went to the Hands-On Museum in Johnson City, TN. While there, the students were able to see an actual fossil dig site where bones from red pandas, tapirs, & rhinos were once found. Students were able to help the scientists on staff, by picking through the gravel that was found to have pieces of seashells. Some students even found small sharp teeth! After the picking activity, students were able to watch a real Tesla coil as it bounced the energy back and forth to some great music. Finally, the students explored the Stellar Stem stations. They participated in rocket races, created large lego buildings, and designed a hot air balloon or airplane that was placed in a video the students got to watch! It was a wonderful day filled with learning and fun!
