We are proud of their decision to join the #FamilyofDragons and are excited to welcome them in the Fall. Congratulations to our newest Kinder-Dragons, Class of 2037! It’s a great day to be a Dragon! 🐉🐉🐉

The students of HES recently participated in FRYSC's "February Family Time" challenge. Throughout February, students spent time reading with their families. They picked ten dates on their calendars to read with their families for at least ten minutes. Additionally, they recorded three times when their family ate together without electronic devices. We cherish and value such special time spent with families, and we are proud of the efforts made by our students. Congratulations, Dragons! 🐉

🐉Striving for excellence! Teachers in the Harlan Independent School District continue to work hard and grow in their profession to make sure that students are receiving the best education possible!
Teachers Ashley Overbay, Dakota Owens, and Paighton Hensley attended KAGAN Cooperative Learning through KVEC.
Tara Posey, Cathy Thomas, Sierra Crow, Paighton Hensley and Courtney Huebner attend the Kentucky Center Of Mathematics Conference.
Megan Freyer and Meredith Maggard attended a 3-part series for the 24 Fundamental American Documents and Speeches through KEDC.
Elementary Literacy Teachers participated in UFLI Foundations Reading Intervention Training with Kristy Stuber from SESC. Teachers were Heather Carmical, Leslie Goss, Michelle Doss, Shawna Cos, and Whitney Creech.
We are proud of our staff and their continued dedication towards their own personal growth inside of the classroom. Everything that they are accomplishing goes towards the betterment of student learning! Way to go, Dragons!

Today is the day! Kinder-Dragons, we will see you soon! 💚🐉

During Miss Kat’s Library Rotation, Mrs. Benson’s class participated in a Reader’s Theatre version of Cinderella. The 1st-grade class is currently learning about folktales and fairytales. The students enjoyed the opportunity to act out the story and had a lot of laughs.

Harlan continues their academic excellence legacy placing three in the Top 10 at the Kentucky Governor's Cup state competition. Aiden Carroll, Sayed Damaa, and Harlan Marietta all finished in the top 10. Congratulations to our coaches and team members. #FamilyofDragons

Mrs. Cindy Howard visited Harlan Elementary's 2nd and 3rd grade classes. She presented a program on Lessons in a Lunchbox: Healthy Teeth Essentials. This program centered around the importance of good oral hygiene and preventing tooth decay. Mrs. Howard demonstrated the proper way to brush and floss your teeth. She also presented each student with a Lunchbox that included information on eating healthy and items necessary for daily oral hygiene. The students enjoyed the program and were so excited about their very own lunchbox!

In collaboration with Mrs. Ledford from PRI, Ms. Wilson’s Health & PE classes for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades had visitors from Pine Mountain Settlement School. Jenn Noble and Roy Hawthorne discussed our Appalachian heritage, culture, and environment with each class. They also brought some Appalachian items, including a quilt, 100 year old skirt, baskets, and homemade wooden toys. The highlight of the visit was the games and dances they shared with the students that were centered around our Appalachian culture. They included Cow Hunt, Patty Cake Pokey, Sally Down the Alley, Kitty Want a Corner, and Blind Man’s Backyard. The students participated so well and had so much fun. For more information about the activities they have at Pine Mountain Settlement School, you can visit their Facebook page or their website: https://www.pinemountainsettlementschool.com/.

The Elementary yearbook will be on sale for $50 this year. We will have a limited number of copies available; therefore, it is advised to order soon. Please make checks payable to Harlan Elementary School. Payments and order forms need to be submitted to the office by Friday, April 26, 2024.
