Harlan Elementary School

Mrs. Cindy Howard visited Harlan Elementary's 2nd and 3rd grade classes. She presented a program on Lessons in a Lunchbox: Healthy Teeth Essentials. This program centered around the importance of good oral hygiene and preventing tooth decay. Mrs. Howard demonstrated the proper way to brush and floss your teeth. She also presented each student with a Lunchbox that included information on eating healthy and items necessary for daily oral hygiene. The students enjoyed the program and were so excited about their very own lunchbox!

In collaboration with Mrs. Ledford from PRI, Ms. Wilson’s Health & PE classes for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades had visitors from Pine Mountain Settlement School. Jenn Noble and Roy Hawthorne discussed our Appalachian heritage, culture, and environment with each class. They also brought some Appalachian items, including a quilt, 100 year old skirt, baskets, and homemade wooden toys. The highlight of the visit was the games and dances they shared with the students that were centered around our Appalachian culture. They included Cow Hunt, Patty Cake Pokey, Sally Down the Alley, Kitty Want a Corner, and Blind Man’s Backyard. The students participated so well and had so much fun. Sunshine School's K-4 students are transitioning to Kindergarten! Students recently visited Mrs. Morton and Mrs. Williams and will see Mrs. Howard and Mr. Noe in the next few weeks. 🎉 HUGE Congratulations are in order for Harlan Middle School 8th Grader, Harlan Marietta!! This weekend, Harlan competed in the State Governor's Cup where he placed 4th in written Composition!! We are so proud of you, Harlan!! 🐉

Kindergarten students at HES had a fun surprise during Read Across America week! Shep Shepherd (father of kindergarten student Brystal) surprised the kids by letting them tour his truck! Thanks to the partnership with Walmart, students toured Mr. Shepherd’s truck and received a coloring book teaching them about safety! The kids had a blast exploring and learning about the bunk beds, refrigerator, and truck driver life. Students got to blow the horn and see the engine. This was a fun experience for our kindergarten students and teachers, too!

In the science lab, the first-grade students have been learning about the engineering process. They read the book, "How to Catch a Leprechaun," and then worked together to build a model of their traps. But that's not all! The science lab was a buzzing place this week! Second-grade students were busy investigating the properties of different materials and seeing if they could build a tall tower using only paper clips and index cards. The aim was to construct a tower at least 12 inches tall. We have a lot of fun at school! 🐉💚
