Students in Mrs. Luttrell's English II classes recently visited the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center in Cincinnati, OH. Sponsored by HHS GEAR-UP, the trip began by visiting Northern Kentucky University. Mrs. Luttrell's students have been studying Man's Inhumanity to Man through learning about the events and causes that led to the Holocaust. Visiting the museum allowed the students to experience stories of "courage, perseverance, loss, redemption...told by Holocaust survivors." Students explored characteristic strengths needed to become upstanders to injustice. Visiting the museum humanizes the horrific event of the Holocaust for students, and they will now be able to make connections to the events and atrocities of the Holocaust when reading Nobel prize winner Eli Wiesel's memoir Night.

This past week, the SKMA All-Festival Choir Festival was held in Corbin, KY. Congratulations to Ethan Farley, Jacob Baker, and Connor Witt. They auditioned several weeks ago and were able to participate in the SATB choir. The choir rehearsed for 3 days and gave their final concert in the Corbin Central Baptist Church. The guest conductor was Daniel Wesley. Mr. Wesley is the Director of Choirs at Lexington Christian Academy and the Artistic Director of the acclaimed Lexington Singers Children’’s Choir. This is Ms. Schraeder’s 51st year accompanying the SATB choir! 🎶🎶🐉

🐉 HHS 9th graders attended the 4H “Reality Store” and experienced an eye-opening simulation of a month as an adult. Students were assigned salaries based on current GPAs and then had to use their projected monthly income to pay for housing, vehicles, childcare, utilities, and other bills, with the goal of ending the month debt-free. Thank you to 4H and the community volunteers who hosted this event!

🇺🇸 Ms. Maggard's 9th-grade Civics classes recently embarked on an enrichment trip to downtown Harlan with the help and leadership of our GEAR Up team! As part of their educational journey, our students had the incredible opportunity to visit our local courthouse and gain firsthand knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of the elected and appointed offices in Harlan County. By witnessing our courthouse's inner workings, they could better comprehend the importance and significance of the various positions that shape our community!

HHS UNITE Club, Harlan FRYSC, and GEAR Up are working to stock Anne's Pantry! They need the help of our middle and high school students to help Anne's Pantry provide for people in need this holiday season. Students can bring in any canned food item; the donation amount will be tallied by grade. The grade that brings in the most canned items will receive a free pizza party during break! Middle school students can drop off canned goods for tallies in Jon Dickenson's room. High school students can give their donations to the GEAR Up rooms. Be sure to tell them which grade to record the donation!

Mr. Owens's health classes are studying the physical activity and nutrition unit. They previously learned about the F.I.T.T. Principle and its 5 main components: muscular endurance, muscular strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, flexibility, and body composition. They also reviewed how to make a workout/activity program. In the photos below, the students made their own workouts; they made the workouts in their group assignments of 3-5 kids. The learning goal of this lesson was to ensure that students have the skills to create and perform a program that will benefit their health. #healthyforlife
