Southeast South-Central Educational (SESC) Cooperative held a recognition lunch Saturday to honor school districts, schools, and individual teachers for their part in the New Teacher Center (NTC) program. This program brought educational coaches into the Harlan Independent to help teachers of various experience levels with guidance in planning and teaching practices. Services were also provided to strengthen other teachers to take on instructional coaching roles as well as inform administrative staff on best practices to improve student achievement.
Harlan Independent has been a part of the NTC program since it began in the 2020-2021 academic year. This year marks the end of the grant that provided the funding for the program and it was a time for celebration. Dr. Gregory Edens attended the event to represent Harlan Independent and was awarded with a certificate of recognition and a gift card for his participation in the program.
SESC and the NTC program will be recognized on the national level for the work they have done in the southeast region of Kentucky. The data gleaned from the program will be used to inform and support other rural educational programs aimed at providing teacher support and professional learning community development. Dr. Edens stated, “SESC has provided assistance within our school district to strengthen my teaching practices and helped me to provide even better educational opportunities for my students.”

The Pathfinder of the Year Award coincides with Community College Month and celebrates the impact of teachers, and counselors on Kentucky high school students
Harlan, Ky. – During a surprise event at Harlan High School, guidance counselor Cristal Pace became the first high school educator to receive the KCTCS Pathfinder Award. Established by the Kentucky Community & Technical College System (KCTCS), the Pathfinder Award recognizes high school teachers and counselors for their outstanding efforts to assist students with their college-going plans.
“High school teachers and counselors work tirelessly to help students succeed in the classroom, workplace, and community,” said Southeast President Vic Adams. “In that spirit, the Pathfinder Award recognizes those who go above and beyond for our next generation. Thanks to Cristal Pace, countless students in Harlan are able to follow their dreams and make sound decisions about their future.”
