Harlan Independent takes 1st place at CEDAR event! Yesterday an entrepreneurial team from Harlan Independent took part in the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College’s District Challenge of the CEDAR Entrepreneurial Community Improvement Program. This team consisted of Miranda Brock, Kevin Lee, Audrey Goss, and Cameron Reynolds. These students were tasked with creating a new business idea that would either solve a community problem, fill a community need, or take advantage of an opportunity, with any of which providing benefit to their community. The district competition consisted of informational sessions to help refine their idea and enrich their understanding of business planning. At the end of the event, the team had pitch their idea to a group of judges and garnered enough points from the judges to take first place. Each student on the team earned a $500 scholarship for their business savvy and will go on to compete at the Regional Challenge on December 9th! A big thank you to their Coach, Tessa Roark, for taking the time to help these students prepare for the event and ultimately find success in all their hard work!

The Louisville Orchestra presented a brass quintet performance for Harlan Independent students on November 3. Students much appreciated and enjoyed this unique opportunity to experience professional music as the sounds of a tuba, trombone, French horn, and trumpets filled the auditorium. In between songs, the musicians answered questions from the audience about careers in the arts, instruments, and music. Afterward, students could meet the musicians and see the instruments up close. Thank you to the Louisville Orchestra for bringing this incredible opportunity to Harlan Independent! 🐉 🎼 #LouisvilleOrchestra
