(Harlan, Ky.) – On Wednesday, October 28, Dr. Tyler Saylor, an English teacher at Harlan High School, became the first educator in Harlan Independent School District history to receive the prestigious Milken Educator Award. The surprise announcement was made during a special assembly at Harlan High School, where Dr. Saylor was recognized for his outstanding contributions to education and presented with an unrestricted $25,000 cash award.
Kentucky Commissioner of Education Dr. Robbie Fletcher joined Milken Educator Awards Vice President Stephanie Bishop to make the surprise presentation before an audience of students, faculty, district leadership, and special guests.
Dr. Saylor commented, “When I walked into the gym today, I never expected this, but my heart is just overflowing with gratitude for my students. They are the entire reason I show up every day, and seeing their faces react to this moment was the greatest gift of all.”
Established in 1987 by philanthropist and businessman Lowell Milken, the Milken Educator Awards have spent almost 40 years recognizing and celebrating exceptional educators across the United States. Often referred to as the "Oscars of Teaching," the awards recognize outstanding K-12 educators for their accomplishments in the classroom and their potential to make an even greater impact on the teaching profession. Unlike traditional awards, educators cannot apply or be nominated for the honor. Instead, recipients are identified through a confidential selection process and surprised with the recognition. Dr. Saylor is Kentucky's 65th Milken Educator Award recipient and joins a select group of up to 30 educators who will be honored nationwide during the 2026–2027 school year. Since its inception, the program has recognized more than 3,000 educators and awarded more than $76 million in individual cash prizes.
Superintendent Jennifer Parsons noted, “The district is incredibly proud of Dr. Saylor. He combines high expectations with meaningful rigor, while meeting the needs of every student. He challenges each learner to reach beyond what they thought possible, providing them the support needed to succeed, while creating an environment where students feel valued, capable and inspired to become the very best version of themselves.”
Harlan High School Principal Mike Bolton praised Dr. Saylor's dedication to his students and the school. “Dr. Saylor is an outstanding educator whose passion for teaching and dedication to his students make a lasting impact on Harlan High School. We are incredibly fortunate to have him as part of our school family, and seeing his hard work and commitment recognized on a national level is a tremendous honor for our entire school and community. We couldn't be prouder of him.”

Dr. Saylor teaches 11th and 12th grade English at Harlan High School, where he is known for creating an engaging and challenging learning environment that encourages students to think critically, develop their writing skills, and reach their full potential. His innovative instructional methods emphasize meaningful student engagement and high academic expectations. In 2025, 98% of his students achieved proficient or distinguished scores in on-demand writing on the Kentucky Summative Assessment.
His leadership and influence extend beyond the classroom to the state level. Dr. Saylor has served in the Kentucky Department of Education's GoTeachKY Ambassador Program and on the Teachers Advisory Council and currently participates in the Kentucky Innovative Teacher Cohort. He also developed a future teacher scholarship to support a Harlan High School senior interested in pursuing education as a career, further demonstrating his commitment to strengthening the teaching profession for future generations.
As a recipient of the Milken Educator Award, Dr. Saylor receives an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize to use as he chooses. While the award carries no restrictions, Dr. Saylor indicated that he would like to use a portion of the money to purchase classroom resources for his students.
Beyond the financial award, Dr. Saylor joins the national Milken Educator Network, which provides professional development, mentorship, and leadership opportunities to distinguished educators across the country. He will also attend the all-expenses-paid Milken Educator Awards Forum in Washington, D.C., where he will collaborate with fellow award recipients, veteran Milken Educators, and educational leaders from across the nation.
Reflecting on the recognition and the significance of sharing the moment with his students and colleagues, Saylor noted, “Teaching isn't just what I do; it’s who I am, and I pour my whole heart into my classroom every single day. I love what I do so deeply, and sharing this beautiful milestone with my school family means everything to me.”
Dr. Saylor's recognition reflects the Harlan Independent School District's longstanding tradition of excellence and its commitment to providing students with an exceptional educational experience. The district congratulates Dr. Saylor on this remarkable national achievement and celebrates the dedication and passion he brings to Harlan High School each day.
