Congratulations to Head Coach Derrick Akal on his selection as the 13th Region Boys Basketball Coach of The Year! Coach Akal will be honored at the 2023 KY Boys High School Sweet Sixteen held at Rupp Arena in March.
After nearly a decade of missing out on the 13th Region Tournament, under the leadership of Akal the Dragons are looking to make their sixth consecutive trip in as many years. He led the Dragons to a 52nd District title over the Black Bears in 2021 and has won five (5) All-A 13th Region Titles.
Harlan has spent the majority of the season sitting among the top of 13th Region teams while reeling off nine consecutive wins twice throughout the season. Harlan will look for win number 24 on Tuesday night at 7:30 when they take on the Bobcats from Bell County in opening round action of the 52nd District Tournament.

In the library, Ms. Cohelia had her classes participate in Blind Date with a Book, where students had the chance to win a book.

Students in Ms. Overbay’s class are learning about how plants and animals respond to changes in their environment. Today the students experimented with predicting how rising sea levels affect tigers that live near the sea. Students designed a land model with soil, leaves, sticks, and rocks and then added water to represent the sea. After this, they added ice to represent glaciers. The students measured and recorded how much land there was before and after the ice melted to see how much the water level rose.🐅 🧊

🎾 There will be no Open Court for Tennis today due to rain!
It needs to be mentioned that we are excited to be able to offer a tennis program again at Harlan Independent Schools and the turnout for Open Court has been great this week! Hopefully this offering provides many students a niche and their love for the sport grows! #MoreThanASchool #HHSTennis

Congratulations to Abigail Wynn for winning a FREE prom ticket for her perfect attendance in January. Abigail and 40 other high school students who had perfect attendance in January were entered into a raffle to win a free prom ticket.

Have your child fill out the calendar with 10 dates that your child read with you for at least 10 minutes, and on the side fill out three times that your family ate together without any electronics and return it to the child’s home room teacher to be entered in to win a prize!
